Important deadline: Senior Circuit Breaker Credit

Applications for the Senior Breaker Tax Credit must be received by September 30, 2025.

This refundable credit is available through the Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR) for qualifying seniors age 65+ who own or rent their principal residence in Massachusetts.

If the credit exceeds the tatal tax owed, the excess is refunded - without interest.

For eligibility details and how to calculate your credit, visit the Mass.gov website for more information.

What is a tax exemption?

A tax exemption provides a partial or full discharge from local property taxes for qualifying individuals. These exemptions are established by the Massachusetts Legislature and governed by Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 59, Section 5.

Exemptions are considered a privilege, and all applicants must demonstrate that they meet eligibility requirements. Eligibility is based on factors such as age, disability status, military service, income level, and asset limits.

Qualification date: all eligibility requirements must be met as of July 1st of the fiscal year.

Filing deadline: applications are due by December 15th or within three months of the mailing of actual tax bills, whichever is later.
