Business property inspections underway for FY2027 revaluation
(2-3 minute read)
The Town of Reading is reminding local business owners that Business Personal Property Inspections for the FY2027 revaluation are part of the Town’s ongoing effort to ensure accurate and equitable property assessments.
What to expect during inspections
A representative from Real Estate Research Consultants (RRC) will be visiting local businesses to conduct inspections. These visits are focused on gathering up-to-date information to support fair assessments.
During the visit, representatives may:
Inspect interior business spaces
Verify business assets
Record taxable items, such as inventory, furniture and fixtures, equipment, and machinery.
Required under state law
These inspections are required under Massachusetts General Law Chapter 59, which governs property assessment practices across the state. The process helps ensure that assessments are accurate, consistent, and fair and equitable across all businesses.
Town officials note that if a business is not inspected, an estimate may be made that may not fully reflect the business's actual assets.
Cooperation is important
Business owners are encouraged to cooperate with inspectors by providing access and information during scheduled visits. Participation helps ensure that property valuations are based on the most accurate and current data available.
