CATO Conversation: private tour of the Royall House & Slave Quarters

CATO: The Coalition of Us invites community members to take part in a meaningful day of history, reflection, and dialogue with a private tour of the Royall House & Slave Quarters in Medford, followed by a conversation at the Reading Public Library.

The day begins with bus transportation leaving from Middlesex Ave on Saturday, September 29, in front of the Reading Public Library at 9:30 am. The private guided tour will last for an hour and a half, providing participants with the opportunity to learn about the history of the enslaved people who lived and labored at the Royall estate and its significance in the broader context of Massachusetts and New England.

The group will return to Reading by noon, where a light lunch and conversation will follow in the Library’s Community Room. The discussion, led by CATO Director Philmore Phillip II and CATO members, will focus on reflecting on the tour experience and exploring how these lessons connect to our hopes for ourselves, our neighbors, and our community.

Details

  • Cost: $20 for the tour

  • Transportation: A voluntary contribution of $20 per person is requested to help cover bus expenses. While options, group transportation is strongly encouraged as it provides an easier and more connected experience than driving and parking individually.

  • Registration: Please register by Thursday, August 28, by emailing elietcp@gmail.com.

CATO hopes this program will spark meaningful conversations, deepen community connections, and encourage reflection on both history and the present.

Note: This program is not endorsed by the Reading Public Library, Board of Library Trustees, or Library staff.
