Don’t be a pain in the drain!
Town reminds residents not to flush wipes or “flushable” products
The Town of Reading is urging residents to think twice before flushing wipes, even those marketed as “flushable,” as part of an ongoing effort to protect the community’s wastewater infrastructure.
Despite labeling, “flushable” wipes do not break down like toilet paper. Instead, they remain intact long enough to clog household plumbing, damage municipal sewer pipes, and jam wastewater pumps - leading to costly repairs and potential backups into homes and streets.
The message is clear: Don’t be a pain in the drain!
Public Works staff report that wipes are among the most common causes of sewer blockages. Even a single household flushing wipes regularly can create systemwide issues downstream.
What should never be flushed?
Cleaning wipes
Makeup remover wipes
Baby wipes
Paper towels
Sanitizing wipes
Cotton swabs or rounds
Dental floss
Feminine hygiene products
The items should always be disposed of in the trash, not the toilet.
Protecting Reading’s sewer system is a shared community responsibility. Proper disposal helps avoid emergency repairs, environmental impact, and service interruptions.
Residents with questions about wastewater or sewer care can contact the Reading Public Works Department.
