Chief David Clark reports that the Reading Police Department, with assistance from the Massachusetts State Police Collision and Accident Reconstruction Section (CARS) and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, has completed its investigation into the May four-car crash that resulted in the death of one individual.
As a result of the investigation, Nashason Mutigi, 26, of Reading, has been charged with:
Motor Vehicle Homicide
Failure to Stop
Marked Lanes Violation
Unsafe Passing
The crash occurred on Main Street (Route 28) when a preliminary investigation determined that the driver of a 2006 Volvo, identified as Mutugi, ran a red light at the intersection of Main Street and Hopkins Street. The Volvo struck the driver’s side door of a 2014 green Ford Fusion that was traveling eastbound on Hopkins Street. The driver of the Ford was pronounced dead at the scene.
At a show cause hearing held today before the clerk magistrate in Woburn District Court, probable cause was found to issue a criminal complaint. Mutugi is scheduled to be arraigned in Woburn District Court on October 8.
Reading Police expressed condolences to the victim’s family, noting that they have been working closely with the family and a victim-witness advocate throughout the process. Police also thanked the Massachusetts State Police CARS and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office for their assistance in the investigation.
“It’s vital that we investigate serious incidents thoroughly, especially when a life is lost, in the best interests of justice. Thank you to our community for its patience.”
This case serves as a sobering reminder that the choices drivers make have consequences - not only for themselves, but for everyone they share the road with. Respecting traffic signals, staying attentive, and driving responsibly can mean the difference between life and death.
