January is Thyroid Awareness Month, bringing attention to thyroid health and the conditions that affect millions of people each year.

The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland in the neck that regulates metabolism and impacts nearly every cell in the body. When it does not function properly, it can lead to significant health issues.

Common thyroid issues

  • Hyperthyroidism: when the body produces too many thyroid hormones

  • Hypothyroidism: when the body does not produce enough thyroid hormones

Possible symptoms

  • Fatigue

  • Depression or mood changes

  • Memory issues

  • Eye problems

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Unexplained weight gain or loss

Risk factors

  • Being assigned female at birth

  • Family history of thyroid disease

  • Turner Syndrome

  • Certain medications high in iodine

  • Age over 60

  • Prior radiation therapy to the head or neck

Most thyroid disorders are manageable with daily medication when properly diagnosed. Awareness and routine medical care are key to early detection and effective treatment.
