Poetry by Richard Perry: New Year, New Hope?

New Year, New Hope?

What will we face in the coming New Year?

For many, it may be trepidation and fear.

With our country’s growing economic ills

So many are unable to pay their bills

While others find that they are unable

To make ends meet and put food on the table

In a country blessed with such great wealth,

Why must so many fear for their health?

Why is it so hard for our leaders to see

That in so many countries, healthcare is free.

Can’t we use our technical skills and knowledge

So that all our children can attend a college

Making this country what our forefathers saw

A nation where all citizens live by the law.

A land where the people hold all the power

And not just a few in some Ivory Tower

Those who treat diversity like it’s a sin.

Allowing only certain folks a chance to win

A place in society where all men are free

Where all can live in peaceful harmony

The new year calls us to find ways to cope

To fight the good fight and never lose hope.

This country belongs to you and to me.

We can make improvements, just wait and see.
