Reading DPW continues storm cleanup with snow removal and sidewalk plowing

(3-4 minute read)

The Reading Department of Public Works has moved on to the snow removal and sidewalk plowing phase of storm cleanup following the recent winter storm.

Crews were out overnight hauling and relocating snow, but officials note that the sheer volume of the storm continues to pose ongoing challenges. Snow removal and plowing operations will continue again tonight, and residents are thanked for their patience as work progresses.

Residents can review town-wide winter policies, including the sidewalk plowing map, on the Town’s Snow & Ice Guidelines page.

How winter operations work in Reading

During the winter months, Reading DPW is responsible for maintaining more than 200 lane miles of roadway. Operations include salting during ice and freezing rain events and plowing during significant snowstorms.

The Town’s snow and ice plan follows clearly identified routes for streets, sidewalks, and school and Town parking areas. In addition to the Town’s own fleet, DPW also utilizes local contractors to support storm response.

Officials emphasize that plows and sanders continue working well after snow has stopped falling, focusing on cleaning, treating, and widening roadways until reasonably safe conditions are achieved.

Sidewalk plowing timeline and expectations

Reading DPW plows more than 50 miles of sidewalks across the community. Town sidewalks, including those in the downtown area, are scheduled for plowing after all roads and Town facilities have been cleared.

Depending on the storm's severity, sidewalk plowing may not begin for up to 72 hours after the storm ends. DPW notes that:

  • The same operators who plow streets - often working 24 to 40 consecutive hours - also plow sidewalks

  • Providing staff sufficient time to rest is critical to safe operations

  • Larger storms significantly extend the time required to complete sidewalk routes

Importantly, the Town of Reading does not apply salt or sand to sidewalks.

How residents can help

DPW encourages residents, if they are able, to help by shoveling sidewalks in front of their properties until Town sidewalk equipment can reach those areas. Any assistance helps improve pedestrian safety during the extended cleanup period.

As recovery continues, residents are reminded that snow removal is an ongoing proces, and patience and cooperation are greatly appreciated as crews work to restore safe travel conditions throughout the community.
