Reading Municipal Light Department (RMLD) recognized by American Public Power Association (APPA) for Outstanding Safety Practices

RMLD earned the highest designation for utilities with 110,000 to 249,000 worker hours of annual worker exposure.

READING, MA – RMLD has earned the APPA Safety Award of Excellence for safe operating practices in 2025. RMLD received the Diamond award in the category for utilities with 110,000 to 249,000 worker hours of annual worker exposure. This is the highest designation awarded by APPA each year and reflects RMLD’s continued commitment to safety.

In 2025, 240 utilities were recognized for their safety efforts. The entrants are placed in accordance with their number of worker hours and ranked based on the most incident-free records and overall state of their safety programs and culture. The incidence rate is based on the number of work-related reportable injuries or illnesses and the number of worker-hours during 2025, as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

“This award is a testament to the hard work that has gone into building a true safety-first culture and ensuring that our team members have a safe work environment,” said Jason Small, RMLD general manager. “I am proud of the efforts of our team and the organization’s commitment to building a strong safety culture.”

APPA has conducted the Safety Awards annually for more than 68 years. APPA is the national association for not-for-profit, community-owned utilities that power 2,000 towns and cities nationwide.
