Reading Public Library to serve as warming center during extreme cold this weekend

(2-minute read)

With well-below-normal temperatures forecast for the weekend, the Reading Public Library will remain open during regular business hours and operate as a warming center for residents in need of a safe, heated space.

Library operations will continue as long as Public Safety officials and the Department of Public Works determine it is safe to keep the building and parking lot open. Residents are encouraged to use the library as a place to warm up, rest, and stay safe during the cold weather.

Cold weather safety tips for residents

Town officials also remind residents to take precautions during extreme cold:

  • Limit time outdoors, especially for young children and older adults

  • Reduce driving when possible - fewer vehicles help keep roads clear for plows and emergency responders

  • Dress in multiple lightweight, moisture-wicking layers

  • Check on neighbors, friends, and family who may need assistance

  • Don’t forget pets - keep them indoors when possible and protect paws when going outside

Additional warming center resources

Residents looking for other warming centers in the region can call 2-1-1 or consult the regional list maintained by Mystic Valley Elder Services, available online.

As winter conditions continue, community members are encouraged to stay informed, look out for one another, and use available resources to remain safe during the cold snap.
