Residents reminded of Open Burning Rules and permit requirements

(3-4 minute read)

The burning season in Reading runs from January 15 through May 1, but residents are reminded that a permit is required and that strict safety and environmental rules apply.

Under the authority of M.G.L Chapter 148, Section 10A, and pursuant to 527 CMR 10.22 and 310 CMR 7.07, the following Open Burning Policy governs all open burning within the Town of Reading Fire Department jurisdiction.

    • Fires may not be left unattended at any time

  9. Permit revocation

Permits may be cancelled or revoked at any time by the Fire Chief or their designee.

  10. Permit inspection

The permit must be available for inspection by Fire Department personnel upon request.

Permits are not transferable and are valid only for the address issued.

Additional regulations related to open burning may be enforced as part of the permit.

How to apply for a 2026 Open Burning Permit

Residents can apply online through the Town’s permitting portal.

Applicants are encouraged to review all rules carefully before burning and to check daily weather and burning conditions.

Open burning is closely regulated to reduce fire risk and protect air quality. By following the permit requirements and safety rules, residents can help keep themselves, their neighbors, and their community safe throughout the burning season.
