SNAP Benefits & Local Community Resources
As a result of the federal government shutdown, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the funding that powers this benefit are currently uncertain. As such, please see the resources below for those who may have their SNAP funds impacted by the shutdown, and how residents can help support local resources for neighbors experiencing food insecurity.

The non-profit Reading Food Pantry currently serves more than 400 households in town and is located at the Old South United Methodist Church at 6 Salem Street in the center of Reading.
When is the food pantry open? the Reading Food Pantry is open to serve neighbors on Mondays from 6:30-7:30pm, and Fridays from 10:30-11:30am.
Is there a waiting period to use the pantry? There is no waiting period to visit the pantry, you will receive food on your first visit.
How do I know if I’m eligible? Do I need to sign up to use the food pantry? If you are a Reading resident and need help with food, you are eligible. No sign up or registration is required.

Statewide hotlines and resources
Project Bread's FoodSource Hotline: Call or text 1-800-645-8333 to speak with a counselor who can help you find food resources and other assistance in your area. The hotline operates Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–7 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m.–2 p.m.
United Response Fund: The 13 United Ways across Massachusetts, in partnership with Governor Maura Healey's administration, established this fund to address the gap left by federal food aid disruptions.
211 Information and Referral: Dialing 2-1-1 can connect you with local food pantries and other community services.
WIC and school meals: These programs would continue to be available even if federal SNAP benefits cease.
The Greater Boston Food Bank: This organization partners with more than 500 hunger-relief agencies throughout eastern Massachusetts. Call 617-598-5022 or email snap@gbfb.org for assistance.

The Pantry also accepts donations Wednesday from 4:30pm-6:00pm. There are bins at Market Basket and Stop & Shop in Reading to drop off food and non-perishable donations.
