Special curbside barrel collection continues this weekend

(2-3 minute read)

The second weekend of Reading’s special curbside barrel collection event is happening tomorrow, Saturday, July 19! This free service allows residents to dispose of their old trash and recycling containers as the town transitions to its new automated cart system.

As part of this initiative, Republic Services will collect old barrels curbside each Saturday through August 9, with pickups scheduled based on your usual weekly trash day.

Tomorrow’s collection (July 19) will serve residents on the Tuesday trash route.

Last week’s collection on July 12 covered homes on the Monday route. If you are unsure of your pickup day, you can view the trash route map and schedule here.

Upcoming collection dates

  • July 19: Tuesday trash route

  • July 26: Wednesday trash route

  • August 2: Thursday trash route

  • August 9: Friday trash route

What to know

  • This service is free of charge and available to all Reading households

  • Barrels must be empty and placed curbside by 6:30 am on your scheduled collection Saturday

  • You do not need to label barrels or contact the DPW in advance

  • Residents can bring their old barrels to the DPW Garage Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:30 am and 2:30 pm

Other options for old barrels

Your old barrels don’t have to go to waste! They can be reused for:

  • Indoor storage

  • Yardwork tools

  • Holding recyclables indoors before transferring them to your new bin

Check out the Town’s website for more information about Reading’s new trash and recycling carts.

If you have questions or run into an issue, please call the DPW Office at 781-439-6930 or submit a request via SeeClickFix.

Let’s keep the transition smooth and make room for the new system - thanks for doing your part!
