Understanding Reading’s budget: new video released

(1-2 minute read)

As Reading prepares for Town Meeting this spring, town officials are offering residents a closer look at how the municipal budget is developed.

A look inside the budget process

Town staff and elected officials have launched a municipal budget video series designed to explain how the town’s finances work - from revenue sources to spending priorities.

The series aims to break down the “dollars and cents” of the budget in a way that is accessible and easy to understand for residents.

What to expect

The Town has already released the four videos in the series, each focused on a key aspect of the budget:

  • Part 1: Our Budget Dollar - an overview of how each dollar is allocated across town services

  • Part 2: Revenue Pressure - factors impacting the town’s ability to generate revenue

  • Part 3: Cost Pressure - rising expenses and the challenges they create for budgeting.

  • Key Numbers -

Additional videos are expected to be released in the coming weeks, further building a clearer picture of the town’s financial landscape ahead of Town Meeting.

Where to watch

Residents can follow along with the series and view each installment on the Town’s website.
