Volunteers invited to help honor veterans ahead of Memorial Day

(2-3 minute read)

The Town of Reading Veterans Services is inviting residents, scouts, and community groups to take part in a long-standing tradition of honoring local veterans ahead of Memorial Day 2026 and America’s 250th birthday.

Volunteers will help place flags and flowers on veterans’ graves at cemeteries throughout Reading, ensuring those who served the country are remembered and recognized.

A tradition of remembrance

Town officials say the annual effort is an important way for the community to come together in gratitude and reflection ahead of the Memorial Day observances.

The event also carries added significance this year as communities across the country prepare to commemorate the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary.

Volunteer schedule

Residents are welcome to participate in any of the scheduled days:

  • Wednesday, May 20, at 9:00 am, meet at Cemetery Garage (with Superintendent Ray Boyd and Veterans Service Officer Will Valliere)

  • Thursday, May 21, at 9:00 am, meet at Charles Lawn, then proceed to Forest Glen

  • Friday, May 22, at 9:00 am, meet at Wood End

  • Saturday, Ma 23, at 9:00 am, meet at Laurel Hill (Scouts and all residents welcome)

Community participation encouraged

Organizers say volunteers of all ages are welcome, whether they are returning participants or helping for the first time.

The effort not only honors veterans but also helps preserve a visible tradition of remembrance and community respect.

Looking ahead

For additional information, residents can contact Reading Veterans Services at 781-942-6652.

As Memorial Day approaches, Town officials hope residents will help recognize the sacrifices of veterans who served the nation.

Every flag and flower placed serves as a visible reminder that their service is not forgotten.
