LtE: Call for Select Board to vote on the override
In 2018, I was proud to be part of Yes For Reading, helping spread the word about what our town stood to lose if the override did not pass. I remember School Committee and Select Board members attending rallies, volunteering at postcard-writing events, canvassing door to door, and holding signs on the Common. I also remember both boards taking public votes in support of the override. It was truly an all-hands-on-deck effort, with everyone working together toward a shared goal: preventing heartbreaking cuts to our schools and town services.
Fast forward to 2026, and we are once again facing the prospect of devastating cuts. I see concerned residents working tirelessly to make sure voters understand what is at stake. Last week, the School Committee voted in support of the override, and I am grateful for that public show of support. Based on the comments made by teachers in attendance before the vote, I know they appreciated it as well.
I was surprised to see that a similar vote has not yet been scheduled for the Select Board so I have submitted a request via email to hold a vote on the override at their next meeting on Tuesday, October 20, just as the School Committee did on October 15. If you agree, please email selectboard@ci.reading.ma.us asap. In times like these, input from our elected officials matters.
