The Reading Board of Library Trustees has officially proclaimed September 2025 as Library Card Sign-Up Month, joining a nationwide initiative to highlight the vital role libraries play in education, community engagement, and lifelong learning.

In the proclamation, the Trustees recognized libraries as “foundational to education, imagination, and opportunity,” offering everything from early literacy programs to digital tools that support personal growth at every stage of life.

Libraries: inclusive and accessible community hubs

The proclamation emphasized that libraries welcome all people, serving as inclusive and accessible spaces that connect individuals across cultures, generations, and experiences. By curating collections and designing programs that reflect community diversity, libraries ensure equitable access to information, technology, and culture for all residents.

Supporting individuals and communities

Reading Public Library is described as a resource that helps residents navigate life’s challenges, providing trusted information, digital access, and connections to essential services. Libraries also play a key role in supporting local economies by equipping job seekers, entrepreneurs, students, and creators with the tools and training needed to succeed.

Whether during times of crisis or calm, library staff remain steadfast in strengthening the community. Library resources also help households save money, reduce waste, and make sustainable choices - all through the shared benefit of a public good.

Opening doors to endless possibilities

A library card, the Trustees note, opens doors to “endless possibilities,” from books and educational materials to technology, creative tools, and programs that spark imagination.

Call to action for residents

As part of the proclamation, the Board highlighted the Reading Public Library’s partnerships with other municipal departments to better serve the community’s diverse needs.

Residents are encouraged to celebrate Library Card Sign-Up Month by obtaining or renewing their library card this September and taking full advantage of the resources, services, and opportunities it provides.
