“I’m so proud to receive this support, as we work to make Massachusetts a welcoming and affordable place for working families,” said McDonald. “These groups represent our immigrant neighbors, and some of our most marginalized communities, who need more urgency and attention from our state leaders. I’ll be proud to fight for these communities every day on Beacon Hill.”

Mass Alliance is a statewide coalition of progressive groups, including environmental groups, unions, reproductive rights, LGBTQ groups and more.

In its endorsement, Mass Alliance stated: “Carey McDonald was first elected to the Malden City Council in 2021 as a Mass Alliance Rising Star. We are now proud to endorse their candidacy for the State Senate. As the Finance Chair of the Malden City Council, Carey possesses a deep understanding of the fiscal challenges facing Malden and municipalities across the Commonwealth. They are seeking office to provide these communities with a dedicated legislative partner focused on securing equitable funding for education and essential public services for working families. Carey is committed to advancing ambitious climate change objectives and protecting the safety and rights of immigrant and LGBTQ residents against national political threats.

UFCW Local 1445 represents grocery store and retail workers, including at four Stop-N-Shop locations in the district in Malden, Stoneham, Reading and Winchester.

In its endorsement, UFCW leaders stated “The State Legislature has felt increasingly alienated from the real needs of working class people. There is a real appetite for new voices who know what it’s like to work for a living and live paycheck to paycheck so that the laws that govern our lives can be written with an understanding of the needs working people face. Carey’s background working for a living shows they understand these specific needs, and their time in Malden City Council shows that they can turn that experience into a real ability to deliver for working people every day.”

About Carey McDonald’s campaign

Carey McDonald is a three-term Malden City Councillor At Large, a nonprofit executive, and working parent. Carey is running because our communities deserve a state senator who will fight for the opportunities our schools and families need — and the courage to take on the problems on Beacon Hill holding us back.

If elected, top priorities for Carey include:

  • Tackling the affordability crisis in housing, utility bills and childcare, so that working people and families can afford to stay in our communities

  • Fixing the local budget crisis, including our broken school funding formula, so our cities and towns can invest in schools, parks, libraries, roads and public health and safety

  • Protecting our rights and our neighbors from Federal attacks, and our climate and clean energy commitments

To accomplish these priorities, Carey will bring transparency, engagement and culture change to Beacon Hill. Carey believes firmly that when we build coalitions for change, and bring more people into the political process, we will succeed in building communities where everyone can thrive.

Carey is married, with two school-age kids in Malden Public Schools. Carey uses they/them pronouns.
