August marks Children’s Eye Health & Safety Month in Reading
The Town of Reading is joining a nationwide effort this August to highlight the importance of vision care during Children’s Eye Health & Safety Month. This annual observance encourages parents, caregivers, educators, and policymakers to recognize the critical role that eye health plays in a child’s development, learning ability, and social engagement.
The importance of eye health awareness
Good vision is essential for success in school, sports, and everyday activities. Early detection of vision problems can prevent more serious issues later in life and improve a child’s overall quality of life. This month is dedicated to promoting preventive care, regular eye exams, and health habits that support lifelong vision health.
Healthy vision tips for children
The Town of Reading is sharing the following tips to protect and promote children’s eye health:
Eat right to protect your sight by including fruits, vegetables, and nutrient-rich foods.
Get moving - regular physical activity benefits overall health, including your eyes.
Speak up if your vision changes; early intervention is key.
Wear your glasses if prescribed, and wear your shades to protect against UV rays.
Keep germs away by washing hands frequently to avoid eye infections.
Gear up for activity with protective eyewear during sports or other high-risk activities.
Follow the 20/20/20 rule - for every 20 minutes, look at something feet away for 20 seconds to reduce eye strain.
Say no to smoking, which can damage vision over time.
Talk about eye health regularly with family members and doctors.
For additional resources and to learn the truth about common eye myths, residents are encouraged to watch the “Ask a Scientist” video on Eye Myths and Facts.
BY fostering healthy habits and raising awareness, Reading hopes to ensure that every child has the opportunity to see clearly and succeed.
