More than 150 donated bikes found new homes this week as the community came together for Reading’s annual Bike Recycling and Give-Away event, a collaborative effort focused on sustainability, accessibility, and community support.

Organized by ReadingCares and the Reading Climate Action Committee, the event brought together volunteers, local organizations, and residents to collect, repair, and redistribute bikes to children and families in need.

A community effort

Volunteers worked to prepare over 150 bikes for adoption, even pushing through challenging weather conditions to ensure the event’s success.

The effort was supported by several local partners, including Reading Municipal Light Department (RMLD), Reading Police Department (RPD), REI, and the Town of Reading.

Organizers credited the event's success to both the dedication of volunteers and the generosity of community members who donated bicycles.

In addition to distributing bikes, the Reading Police Department participated in the event, leading a mini bike safety course to help young riders build confidence and stay safe on the road.

Police officials highlighted the initiative's impact, noting that the event not only provides access to bicycles but also promotes safe riding habits.

Sustainability and connection

The Bike Recycling and Give-Away event reflects a broader effort to reduce waste by repurposing bicycles, increase access to transportation and recreation, and strengthen community connections.

Organizers emphasized that each donated bike represents both an environmental benefit and an opportunity for a child or family.

Looking ahead

With another successful year complete, organizers are already looking forward to next year’s event and encouraging continued community involvement.

“We hope to see everyone next year for another successful bike event!” ReadingCares organizers shared on their Facebook page.
