Neither heat nor hills could keep away the crowd at this year’s 40th Annual Journey for Sight, hosted by the Reading Lions Club and Friends of Reading Recreation on Thursday, July 17, 2025. With more than 270 participants registered, the event brought runners, walkers, families, and even a few four-legged companions to Memorial Park for a summer evening of fitness, fun, and community spirit.
A scenic course, despite the heat
Starting and finishing near Harrison Avenue, the 5k course wound through the neighborhoods of Pearl Street, Wakefield Street, and Charles Street, before looping back to Memorial Park. While the hot temperatures posed a challenge, race staff were quick to respond - offering cold water and ice at the finish line to help participants cool down safely.

Post-race refreshments and celebration
After crossing the finish line, participants were treated to a spread of pizza, bananas, and a variety of chips as they waited for others to finish and gathered for the award ceremony. The casual, picnic-style atmosphere gave everyone a chance to relax, socialize, and celebrate a race well run.
New youth category brings family fun
This year marked the debut of the new 15 & under age group, which drew 47 participants. “The kids and family groups certainly created a festive environment,” said race organizer Desirée Zicko. “We wanted this to be a race where families could participate together, and we really saw that come to life.”
Prizes and swag for finishers
Participants walked away with more than just sore legs - many received a blue long-sleeve shirt featuring the race logo and sponsors. The top three finishers in each age category earned a custom pint glass, while all youth runners in the 15 & under group received medals for their accomplishments. Check out the race results below - don’t forget to congratulate your friends, family, and neighbors!

Fundraising and community support
While the final fundraising total is still being calculated, organizers are optimistic. Last year’s event raised $19,500 to support the Massachusetts Lion Eye Research Fund, the Perkins School for the Blind, the Carroll Center for the Blind, and the Massachusetts Association for the Blind & Visually Impaired. With increased participation and sponsorships this year, the Lions Club hopes to match or surpass that number.
Special thanks to supporters and volunteers
Desirée Zicko offered heartfelt thanks to the many individuals and organizations who made the event possible, including:
Reading Department of Public Works and Public Safety
The RMHS Girls Track Team, who helped with registration and course support
Community donor Walking Joe Coughlin, whose contributions come from many small and medium-sized gifts
Local businesses and individuals who sponsored or donated to the event
