Hundreds of residents gathered on the Reading Town Common on Sunday, November 30, to enjoy an afternoon of festive fun with neighbors ahead of the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. While light rain early may have delayed some of the crowd, it certainly didn’t dampen the spirits of the youngest attendees, especially those eager to see Santa Claus arrive and bring the trees on the Common to life with holiday magic.

The event offered a wide range of seasonal activities. Families enjoyed a horse-drawn hayride and a trolley ride through the downtown area. Fire pits crackled on the cobblestone, giving everyone a chance to roast marshmallows and make warm s’mores. A roaming performer, Davey, brought smiles to children and adults alike, and several stunning hand-carved ice sculptures added to the festive atmosphere.

Downtown businesses also helped keep spirits high. Nella’s served hot pizza to families passing by, and Whitelam Books welcomed children for a cozy Holiday Story Time. The Old South Methodist Church and First Baptist Church opened their doors to offer hot cocoa, small treats, and a warm break from the chilly weather.

The excitement built as Santa Claus greeted children at the Reading Cooperative Bank before being escorted by Reading Fire and Police to the Town Common. With a joyful countdown from the crowd, Santa lit the trees throughout the Common, culminating with the Christmas tree glowing brightly at the center of the lawn.

Thank you to all of the local businesses who served as sponsors and vendors for this beloved community tradition, and to the DPW and town staff who spent the past several weeks preparing the lights and decorations.

From The Reading Observer, we wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday season!
