Geoffrey Coram announces candidacy for School Committee

Dear Reading Voters:

Photo provided by the Coram campaign.

I am asking for your support for my election to School Committee. The Reading Public Schools did an excellent job of educating my daughters, and I would like to help ensure that excellence for current and future students.

My wife and I moved to Reading 25 years ago, and we chose this town primarily for its schools. I have had the privilege of volunteering for the schools for 20 years, from being a field trip chaperone to along-time Drama Club set builder (10 years and counting) to PTO Treasurer at Birch Meadow, Coolidge, and then RMHS (12 years in total). I have been on the town Finance Committee since 2021 and serve as its liaison to the School Committee, and I briefly served on the School Committee as an interim member in 2019. Although I no longer have children in the public schools, I am still passionate about education and deeply invested in the success of our schools.

As a School Committee member, I would welcome the new superintendent and help that person understand the special strengths and challenges of all eight schools. I would help guide the budget to make effective and efficient use of the funds allocated by the taxpayers. I would support thoughtful discussions and policies on the proper use of (and restrictions on) technology like artificial intelligence and cell phones. I would maintain the focus on closing the achievement gaps between subgroups. But most importantly, I would work to expand opportunities for various avenues of success and to ensure all children feel welcome in and supported by the Reading Public Schools.

Many of my favorite memories of Reading are tied to its public schools, from volunteering in my daughters’ elementary school classrooms to proudly watching their graduations as valedictorians in 2019 and 2021. I hope you will give me the opportunity to continue supporting the Reading Public Schools and the children of our town as a member of the School Committee. I would appreciate your vote in the Reading town election on April 7, 2026.

Sincerely,

Geoffrey Coram
