High Street & Downtown Streetscape project begins early work phase

(2-3 minute read)

The Town of Reading is moving forward with the High Street & Downtown Streetscape Improvements Project, with initial construction activity began this week.

Town officials say the project reflects an ongoing commitment to improving downtown infrastructure while keeping residents and businesses informed throughout the process.

Initial work began April 21

Contractor mobilization and staging will begin on April 21, with crews expected to be visible in the downtown area.

This early phase of work will focus on site setup and structure placement, as well as preparatory work ahead of larger construction phases.

Officials noted that no major traffic disruptions or heavy construction activity are expected during this initial stage.

Early infrastructure improvements

In the weeks following mobilization, work will shift to underground and utility improvements, particularly in the area around the depot. This includes conduit upgrades and stormwater infrastructure improvements.

These upgrades are part of the broader efforts to modernize downtown systems and improve long-term reliability.

Major construction planned for summer

More visible construction activity is expected later in the summer, when work expands to include:

  • Roadway improvements

  • Sidewalk construction

  • Streetscape enhancements, such as lighting, landscaping, and public space elements

The goal of these upgrades is to create a safer, more accessible, and more attractive downtown for residents, visitors, and local businesses.

Staying informed

Town staff have been working closely with downtown businesses to communicate, anticipate impacts, and ensure continued access throughout construction.

Residents and business owners are encouraged to sign up for CodeRED to receive notifications.

Additional details, timelines, and updates are available on the Town’s project page.

Ongoing updates

As construction progresses, the Town plans to continue sharing updates to keep the community informed.

Residents can expect more information in the coming weeks as the project moves into its next phases.
