July is Sarcoma Awareness Month: understanding the “forgotten cancer”
Every July, communities across the country recognize Sarcoma Awareness Month - a time to bring attention to a rare and often misunderstood group of cancers that form in the bones or soft tissue of the body. The Town of Reading joins this important observance to help raise awareness, promote early detection, and support those affected.
What are Sarcomas?
Sarcomas are a group of malignant tumors that can develop in bones or the soft tissues that connect and support the body, such as fat, muscle, nerves, cartilage, tendons, blood vessels, and joints.
There are several distinct types of sarcoma, including:
Soft tissue sarcomas: found in fat, muscle, blood vessels, and connective tissues
Osteosarcomas: develop in the bone
Liposarcomas: arise in fat tissue
Rhabdomyosarcomas: begin in muscle tissue
Ewing Sarcomas: can occur in both bone and soft tissue
These cancers are rare, but they occur in people of all ages and are often difficult to detect in early stages.
Early signs and symptoms
Early diagnosis can make a significant difference. Here are some potential warning signs:
A lump that can be felt through the skin (may or may not be painful)
Persistent bone pain
A bone that breaks without a significant cause
Abdominal or belly pain
Unexplained weight loss
If you or someone you love is experiencing these symptoms, consult a healthcare provider promptly.
Treatment options
Treatment for sarcoma depends on the type and stage of the cancer. Common approaches include:
Surgery to remove the tumor
Radiation therapy
Chemotherapy
Targeted therapy
Immunotherapy
A team of specialists often works together to determine the best course of treatment for each individual.
Why awareness matters
Sarcoma is sometimes called the “forgotten cancer” because of its rarity and the lack of widespread public knowledge. Awareness leads to earlier diagnosis, better research funding, and stronger support systems for patients and families navigating their cancer journey.
To learn more or support sarcoma research, advocacy, or patient networks, visit national organizations such as the Sarcoma Foundation of America or talk to your local health providers.
Let’s stand together this July to support awareness, research, and hope for all affected by sarcoma.
