Last call: apply for a Community Garden plot by April 1
(3-4 minute read)
The deadline is approaching for residents interested in growing their own food this season at the Community Garden plots located in the Mattera Conservation Area.
Applications are now open for plots in Reading’s Community Garden, with a deadline of April 1, 2026, for priority consideration.
A growing space in the community
Opened in 2022, the Community Garden sits opposite the Mattera Cabin and offers residents a shared space to grow produce and flowers.
The garden currently includes:
46 total plots
43 ground-level plots (4’ x 8’, 17.5” high)
3 raised plots (29” high) for easier accessibility
All plots are framed and filled with planting soil, and gardeners can choose the plot type that best fits their needs when applying.
Apply for a garden plot
Gardeners of all experience levels are encouraged to apply. Plots are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and applications will remain open until all spaces are filled.
Residents can apply and access the gardener agreement here.
Each plot costs $50 per year to help cover garden maintenance.
What to expect
Gardeners are expected to follow standard community garden guidelines, including:
Using organic practices
Avoiding invasive plants
Attending an orientation meeting
Participants are also encouraged to take part in shared workdays and informal gatherings throughout the season.
Grow your own - and give back
In addition to individual plots, residents also have the opportunity to sponsor a garden plot for the Reading Food Pantry, helping provide fresh produce to local families in need.
More details on sponsorship opportunities available on the Community Garden website.
