Marfan Syndrome Awareness Month: know the signs, save lives
(2-minute read)
February is Marfan Syndrome Awareness Month, focused on increasing understanding of a genetic connective tissue disorder that can affect the heart, blood vessels, eyes, and skeleton.
Because symptoms vary wildly, awareness and medical evaluation are critical.
Possible signs of Marfan Syndrome
More visible signs
Long arms, legs, and fingers
Tall, thin body type
Curved spine
Chest that sinks in or sticks out
Flexible joints
Flat feet
Crowded teeth
Unexplained stretch marks
Less visible but serious signs
Heart and aorta problems
Eye conditions such as severe nearsightedness, lens dislocation, or early glaucoma
Risk of sudden lung collapse
Not every person will have every sign. Anyone with concerns should seek medical evaluation. More information is available from The Marfan Foundation.
