Reading to negotiate separation agreement with Town Manager
(4-5 minute read)
Town Manager Matt Kraunelis and the Town of Reading issued a joint statement during the February 24, 2026, Select Board meeting addressing the status of his tenure.
According to the statement shared publicly at the meeting, the parties have been unable to come to acceptable terms regarding his continued service and are now working to negotiate a separation agreement.
The announcement marks a significant leadership transition at a time when several major Town initiatives, including budget preparation, are underway.
Acting Town Manager appointment prioritized
Members of the Select Board agreed that ensuring continuity of leadership is critical with Town Meeting approaching in April.
To that end, the Board authorized Town Counsel Ivria Fried to begin negotiations with Assistant Town Manager Jayne Wellman to serve as Acting Town Manager.
The Board indicated it expects to reconvene, likely on Tuesday of next week, to review and potentially execute an Acting Town Manager contract.
Board members emphasized the importance of maintaining stability in day-to-day operations, budget development, and ongoing municipal projects during the transition.
Leadership changes in multiple areas
The Town Manager transition comes at a time of broader leadership change in Reading. In December, Dr. Thomas Milaschewski, Superintendent of the Reading Public Schools, announced he will depart at the end of the 2025-2026 school year.
With both Town Hall and the School District facing leadership transitions within the same fiscal year, the Select Board’s immediate focus is ensuring continuity and operational stability.
Further updates regarding the separation agreement and Acting Town Manager appointment are expected at the Board’s upcoming meeting.
