National Impaired Driving Awareness Month
Stay safe this December: sober driving saves lives
December marks National Impaired Driving Awareness Month, a time when communities across the country come together to raise awareness about the deadly consequences of driving under the influence. As holiday gatherings and year-end celebrations fill our calendars, it becomes more important to plan and make safe decisions.
According to national data, every 42 minutes, someone in the United States dies as a result of alcohol-impaired driving. Impaired driving claims more than 12,000 lives annually, leaving families, neighborhoods, and communities profoundly affected. These tragedies are entirely preventable.
This month, the Town of Reading is reminding residents to take a few simple steps to keep themselves and others safe.
Plan your ride home before the festivities begin.
Whether it’s a designated driver, rideshare service, taxi, or friend, deciding ahead of time eliminates the risk of impaired driving.
If you drink, do not drive for any reason.
Even small amounts of alcohol can slow reaction time and impair judgement.
Always wear your seatbelt.
Seat belts are one of the most effective tools for preventing serious injury and death in crashes.
“Sober driving saves lives,” the message reminds us. The choice not to drive impaired protects not only you, but everyone sharing the road.
As we enjoy the season, let’s also commit to ending preventable harm on our roadways. Stay safe. Stay sober.
