Reading Police share Halloween safety tips ahead of Trick-or-Treating

(1-minute read)

As residents take part in Halloween events throughout the week and gear up for Halloween night, the Reading Police Department is sharing a few simple safety tips to help keep the holiday fun and safe for everyone.

For Trick-or-Treaters

  • Wear bright-colored or reflective clothing and carry a flashlight or glow sticks to stay visible.

  • Use sidewalks and crosswalks whenever possible, and look both ways before crossing the street.

  • Stay with your group and make sure a trusted adult knows your route.

  • Only visit homes with their porch lights on, and never enter a stranger’s home.

  • Check all candy and treats before eating them.

For drivers

  • Slow down and stay alert, especially in residential neighborhoods.

  • Watch carefully for children crossing streets, walking between parked cars, and entering roadways.

  • Avoid distractions, and remember that excited children may not always be paying attention to traffic.

For homeowners

  • Keep walkways, stairs, and entrances well-lit and free of tripping hazards.

  • Use battery-operated candles instead of open flames in pumpkins and decorations.

  • Keep pets secure and away from the excitement of trick-or-treating.

The Reading Police Department said a little extra caution goes a long way in keeping the community safe and encouraged residents to do their part to make Halloween fun and memorable for everyone. The department wished residents a happy, safe, and spooktacular Halloween!
