Reading Recreation seeks volunteers for new Snow Patrol program

Reading Recreation, in partnership with Elder Services, is launching Reading Snow Patrol, a free, volunteer-based program that connects residents with nearby neighbors who may need help clearing snow in winter.

Who the program is for

Many residents, including those age 60 and older, may have difficulty safely clearing snow from the steps, walkways, sidewalks, driveways, or other essential areas around their homes. Snow Patrol aims to match volunteers with residents in their own neighborhood or nearby area whenever possible. Following the snowfall, volunteers will be asked to help clear essential pathways.

Who can volunteer

Volunteers must be age 18 or older and can participate as individuals, couples, or families. Younger family members may take part as long as an adult age 18 or older accompanies them at all times. Local snow removal businesses are also welcome to participate and help a neighbor in need.

Participation is free, and volunteers are not paid. Organizers say anyone with a shovel, snowblower, or simply the willingness to give a little time can help.

How to sign up

The program’s initial goal is to recruit as many volunteers as possible across town. Organizers want a strong team in place before Snow Patrol launches this winter.

Residents interested in volunteering can visit the Reading Recreation website. Organizers will send additional information and required forms to all registered volunteers before the program launches and as residents are identified for assistance.

The announcement comes as the town also prepares for the subsequent Town Meeting, where a proposed townwide snow shoveling bylaw is among the articles on the warrant. At the September 22 Select Board meeting, town officials said they were setting up a volunteer organization to help residents who need assistance through the Pleasant Street Center, in coordination with the Recreation Department and the schools.
