Rep. Tram Nguyen Statement on Threats to Escalate Military Operations in Iran

Andover, MA: State Representative Tram Nguyen issued the below statement on Trump’s threats to increase military operations in Iran.

“The Constitution is explicit: the power to declare war rests solely with Congress, not the President. Every Member of the House and Senate must be on record as opposing or supporting any use of force in Iran.

“The President continues to show why the power to declare war should not rest with an unhinged leader who oversteps executive authority and has no respect for putting American servicemembers and citizens across the globe at risk, and further destabilizing the region. His actions and words show he is unfit for the office and should immediately be removed. Even members of his own party and his trusted allies are calling into question the president’s sanity and ability to continue to hold office.

“The people of Iran for months have courageously spoken out over the past few months demanding an end to oppression and brutality within their own country. Threatening unlawful military escalation and the destruction of a whole civilization, including civilian targets, is a direct violation of international law and clearly shows this is not about supporting the people of Iran. The struggle of Iranian citizens for freedom deserves our moral support. But that struggle does not justify launching our nation into another major conflict without meaningful congressional oversight, authorization, or clear strategy.”
