Senior Property Tax Exemptions available for FY2027

As Reading enters Fiscal Year 2027, which runs from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027, the Assessor’s Office is encouraging eligible senior taxpayers to apply for property tax exemptions.

Who qualifies

Property tax exemptions are available to qualifying seniors who meet eligibility requirements for age, domicile, ownership, occupancy, annual income, and assets. Applicants must meet all eligibility requirements as of July 1 of the tax year.

How to apply

Applications are available beginning July 1, 2026, and can be obtained through the Town website or by visiting the Assessor’s Office. All applications are reviewed after submission, and applicants will receive written notification by mail once a determination has been made, which will occur after November 1.

Understanding FY2027

  • FY27 runs from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027

  • Preliminary tax bills are issued in July and October and are based on last year’s tax amount

  • Property assessments are based on full and fair cash value as of January 1, 2026

  • Actual tax bills are issued in January and April, after values and the tax rate are finalized.

Real Estate and Personal Property tax bills

Real Estate and Personal Property tax bills were mailed out on June 30 and are due August 3. Residents who don’t receive their bill in the mail should call the Collector’s Office at 781-942-9023 or visit the Town website.

As a reminder, water bills are due July 15.
