As families and friends gather to celebrate Independence Day this weekend, the Town of Reading is encouraging residents to keep safety top of mind throughout the holiday weekend.
Officials shared a few simple reminders for a safe celebration:
Leave fireworks to the professionals. Fireworks are illegal for personal use in Massachusetts and can cause serious injuries and fires.
Grill safely. Keep grills away from homes, decks, and other combustible materials, and never leave them unattended.
Drive sober. If plans include alcohol, designate a driver, use a rideshare service, or arrange a safe ride home.
Watch for pedestrians. Expect increased foot traffic around celebrations and gatherings. Slow down and stay alert.
Keep pets safe. Fireworks and loud noises can be stressful for animals. Keep pets indoors, secure, and wearing identification.
The Town of Reading hopes these reminders help make this 4th of July safe, enjoyable, and memorable for everyone in the community.
