Snow returns to Reading: crews treat roads

Winter weather is making another appearance in Reading, with steady snowfall expected to bring about 3-4 inches of total accumulation before tapering off later this afternoon. Town crews began road treatment early and continue working through neighborhood streets to keep travel routes as safe as possible.

Public works teams started salting operations around 4:00 am, with plowing operations ramping up by late morning. Main roads are currently reported to be mostly wet, while crews are continuing to clear and treat side streets.

Road work underway across town

Snow and ice crews, including the Town’s well-known plow fleet, are actively covering routes throughout Reading. Officials say progress is steady, with priority given to major roadways before moving deeper into residential areas.

Residents should expect ongoing plowing and treatment through the afternoon as snowfall winds down.

Cold air moving in after the storm

While snowfall is expected to end around mid-to-late afternoon, much colder air is forecast overnight and into tomorrow, increasing the chance of refreezing on untreated surfaces. Residents are urged to use caution on sidewalks, driveways, and less-traveled roads.

Parking and plowing access

Officials remind residents that vehicles parked on the street during storms can reduce plowing effectiveness and slow clearing operations.

At this time, there is no overnight parking ban in effect, but residents are encouraged to move vehicles off the street when possible to help crews complete their work.

A good day for indoor plans - or winter fun!

With conditions chilly and snowy, today may be a good opportunity to:

  • Stay in and catch the Winter Olympic sports coverage

  • Prepare favorite game-day recipes

  • Get outside for snowshoeing or a winter walk

  • Build a snowman while the snow is fresh

Town staff say crews will remain on duty through the event and into the cold snap that follows.

Residents are encouraged to stay warm, check on neighbors who may need assistance, and allow extra time for travel where needed.
