Reading Downtown Improvements Phase II project goes out to bid

The Town of Reading has announced that the Downtown Improvement Phase II project is now officially out to bid, marking a major step forward in planned upgrades to the High Street and depot-area downtown corridor.

Town officials say the project reflects Reading’s ongoing commitment to keeping residents informed about major capital projects and infrastructure investments, particularly those supported by state grant funding.

State grant support for downtown improvements

Reading received a MassWorks Infrastructure Program grant through the Commonwealth’s Community One Stop for Growth program to help fund downtown improvements. The competitive state grant supports infrastructure projects that advance economic development and public-use enhancements.

Through that program, Reading was awarded $2.6 million in 2023 for downtown streetscape improvements aligned with the Town’s broader redevelopment and accessiblity goals.

Town Meeting approved project funding

In spring 2025, Reading Town Meeting members approved the required funding and authorizations needed to move the project forward. That vote established a total project budget of $4 million, combining state grant funds with local appropriations.

Town officials noted that this step ensured both financial capacity and public approval before the project could proceed to the bidding and construction phase.
