Reading Public Library (RPL), Reading, MA—New at the Library! Girl Scouts from Reading Troop 82422 have completed a Silver Award Project on pet care that promises to be a useful resource for the community. Silver Awards, the second-highest award for Girl Scouts, are earned when scouts research an issue, make a plan to address it, and then take action to implement the plan and improve their community. Projects take a minimum of 50 hours of work and include a plan to sustain the project.
Sarah Roden, Ari Bolognese, and Amelia Zerfas worked together for more than six months on a project that tackles the lack of knowledge on proper pet care. The trio created nine educational binders, each dedicated to caring for a common pet such as dogs, cats, rabbits, or chickens. In each binder you’ll find a full introduction to each animal, including its traits and characteristics. The binder focuses on pet care including first days at home, nutrition, and exercise needs, as well as common behavioral or health concerns.
The scouts worked with Library staff in reference and technical services to ensure the binders are fully integrated in the collection and easy to find. Each is assigned a catalog number and they are now available to place on hold and borrow like any other library item. Check them out!
