Today’s the day: everything you need to vote

Today is Massachusetts’ September 1 State Primary. If you haven’t voted early, polls are open from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm. Here’s everything you need to make your voice heard before they close.

Where and how to vote

Unlike early voting, which was held at Town Hall, today’s primary is held at the Reading Memorial High School Hawkes Fieldhouse (62 Oakland Road). All Reading precincts vote there, so head to the fieldhouse and look for your precinct’s table. Not sure what to bring? The Reading Observer’s voter information page has details on how to vote. You can also review the 2026 State Primary sample ballot ahead of time so there are no surprises when you get to the booth.

If you still have a mail-in ballot at home, it must be returned in person today, either to the Town Clerk’s office at Town Hall (16 Lowell Street) or to the white drop box, by 8:00 pm for it to count. Mailing it today won’t get it there in time.

What’s on the ballot

Today’s ballot includes a competitive Democratic primary for U.S. Senate between incumbent Senator Ed Markey and Congressman Seth Moulton, a wide-open Democratic field for the 6th Congressional District, and a State Senate race for the 5th Middlesex District. That last one matters more than usual this year, with no Republican candidate on the ballot for November, whoever wins today’s Democratic primary is very likely to hold the seat outright.
