Town of Reading recognizes Minority Mental Health Awareness Month
The Town of Reading is proud to recognize National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, an initiative dedicated to raising awareness about the unique mental health challenges and disparities faced by racial and ethnic minority communities in the United States.
Why this month matters
Established in honor of Bebe Moore Campbell, a tireless advocate for equitable mental health care, this national observance serves as a reminder that while mental illness can affect anyone, access to quality care is not always equal. Mental illness doesn’t choose who is affected by it. But culture, race, gender, or sexual orientation can affect access to treatment, support, and quality of care for many. Let’s change this.
The reality of mental health disparities
Research shows that 1 in 5 people experience a mental health condition at some point in their lives. But for many in minority communities, stigma, cultural barriers, discrimination, and lack of access to care create additional challenges that can delay or prevent treatment.
Common barriers include:
Cultural stigma around mental illness
Lack of representation in the mental health workforce
Language barriers
Financial and insurance limitations
Systemic racism and historical mistrust in healthcare systems
How Reading is supporting awareness
The Town of Reading is committed to fostering dialogue and education on mental health, particularly within communities that may face disproportionate challenges. Throughout July, residents are encouraged to:
Learn more about mental health in minority communities
Share their stories to help reduce stigma
Promote culturally competent care and resources

Together, let’s make a difference
Everyone deserves access to compassionate, high-quality mental health care. This month presents a powerful opportunity to raise awareness, foster empathy, and take steps toward achieving equity for all.
