Blizzard Warning issued for Reading; snow emergency and parking ban announced

(2-3 minute read)

The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning for Reading and the surrounding area, in effect from Sunday evening through Tuesday morning. The storm is expected to bring heavy snowfall and strong winds, creating hazardous travel conditions and reduced visibility.

In response, the Town Manager and Chief of Police have declared a snow emergency.

On-street parking ban in effect

As part of the snow emergency:

  • All on-street parking is banned beginning at 1:00 am Monday through 6:00 am Tuesday.

  • Vehicles that impede snow removal operations will be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense.

Residents are urged to move vehicles off public roadways to allow plow crews to clear streets safely and effectively.

DPW operations

The Reading Department of Public Works (DPW) plans to begin plowing operations early Monday morning, with crews expected to work through the day and into the evening as conditions require. Snow removal efforts will focus first on primary roadways before moving into residential areas.

Service and facility updates

Several service disruptions have already been announced:

  • Republic Services will not collect rubbish and recycling on Monday (2/23). All pickups will be delayed by at least one day.

  • The Reading Public Library will be closed on Monday (2/23).

  • The Reading Public Schools, Reading Town Hall, and the Pleasant Street Center will share any closure decisions via email and their usual communication channels.

Stay informed and stay safe

Town officials say additional updates will be shared as conditions evolve. Residents are encouraged to:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel during the height of the storm

  • Check on elderly or vulnerable neighbors

  • Prepare for possible power outages

  • Monitor official Town channels for updates

With high winds and heavy snow forecasted, officials emphasize the importance of staying indoors when possible and allowing public safety and public works crews to operate safely.
