Bylaw Committee to hold public forums on potential snow shoveling bylaw

(3-4 minute read)

The Reading Bylaw Committee will hold two upcoming public forums to gather input on a potential Snow Shoveling Bylaw.

  • Tuesday, September 16 at 7:30 pm - Virtual only

  • Wednesday, September 24 at 7:30 pm - Hybrid (in-person at the Reading Public Library Community Room and virtually via Zoom)

The forums are intended to give residents the opportunity to share their perspectives on whether the town should adopt new rules requiring property owners to clear snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their homes or businesses. The proposed bylaw is being considered in response to ongoing concerns about pedestrian safety and accessibility during the winter months, particularly for children, seniors, and residents with disabilities.

The Committee stresses that no decisions have been made and that community feedback is essential before drafting or recommending any bylaw language for Town Meeting consideration. Public input is critical in an issue like this to better understand residents’ experiences, challenges, and concerns to determine the best path forward.

The forums will include an overview of how other communities approach snow shoveling bylaws, followed by time for questions, comments, and discussion.

Residents are encouraged to attend one or both sessions, voice their opinions, and help shape the conversation. Details on how to join the September 16 virtual forum and the hybrid September 24 session will be posted on the Town of Reading Website.
