Chute Street to close as part of downtown improvements project

(1-minute read)

The southern half of Chute Street will be closed for utility work in the coming weeks, including the replacement of a water main found to be in poor condition, the town announced.

The closure will take place on the following dates:

  • Thursday, June 18

  • Tuesday, June 23 to Thursday, June 25

  • Sunday, June 28 (morning only)

According to the town, current utility excavation on Chute Street revealed a section of water main in poor condition. Officials say leaving the damaged main in place would pose a significant risk of an emergency water main break during later phases of the Downtown Improvements project, when heavy paving and curbing work is scheduled. Replacing the water main now, during a controlled shutdown, is intended to reduce the likelihood of an unplanned disruption later on.

This week’s work

Utility work is already underway at the intersection of High Street and Chute Street, with electrical conduit to be placed on Thursday, June 18. That work is being completed before the water main replacement begins to avoid conflicts between utility crews working in the same area.

Preparation and replacement

Preparation for the water main replacement will take place on June 23 through June 25. The actual pipe replacement will occur on Sunday, June 28, beginning at 6 am.

Any temporary disruption to water service for adjacent buildings will occur specifically on Sunday, June 28, during the replacement work. The town noted that additional direct notification will be sent to businesses and residents whose water service will be affected.

Questions about the project can be directed to the Engineering Division at 781-942-9082.
