The Town of Reading is joining communities across the country in celebrating National Public Works Week, an annual recognition led by the American Public Works Association that honors the professionals who help keep communities running every day.

Public Works employees are now nationally recognized as First Responders for their critical role in supporting public safety, infrastructure, and emergency response operations.

The work residents rely on every day

Town officials noted that Public Works services are woven into daily life, even if much of the work happens behind the scenes.

From clean drinking water and maintained roadways to parks, stormwater systems, and public infrastructure, the Reading Department of Public Works helps ensure the community remains safe, functional, and connected throughout the year.

Officials emphasized that DPW crews work year-round and under all conditions, often responding to storms, emergencies, infrastructure failures, and other urgent situations.

Highlighting Reading’s DPW teams

To kick off the first featured division during National Public Works Week, the Town is highlighting the work of the Water & Sewer Division.

Every time a resident turns on a faucet, flushes a toilet, or runs a dishwasher, they rely on a complex system maintained by this team.

The Water Division helps ensure residents and businesses have access to clean, safe drinking water by:

  • Monitoring water quality

  • Maintaining water mains

  • Responding to water main breaks

  • Managing hydrants for daily operations and fire protection

Meanwhile, the Sewer division works behind the scenes to safely transport wastewater away from homes and businesses throughout the community.

Their responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining sewer lines

  • Operating and maintaining 12 pumping stations

  • Responding to blockages and overflows

  • Preventing sewer backups that could impact homes or the environment

Town officials said these teams play a vital role in protecting public health, supporting emergency services, and ensuring essential daily functions continue without interruption.
