Reading schools remain closed as crews continue snow removal
(3-4 minute read)
As of 6:00 pm, Reading has received approximately 14 inches of snow, and more than 50 pieces of equipment have been deployed to clear roads during the storm. Crews have been working continuously since last night to manage plowing and salting operations across town.
Tuesday closures and openings
Due to continued cleanup efforts, Reading Public Schools will remain closed on Tuesday, February 24.
The Reading Public Library will reopen on Tuesday at 9:00 am, and all other Town buildings are expected to operate on their normal schedules.
Trash & recycling
Republic Services will resume rubbish and recycling collection on Tuesday, with all routes operating on a one-day delay for the remainder of the week.
DPW operations and road conditions
The Department of Public Works (DPW) reports that plowing operations have been ongoing since the start of the storm. Municipal parking lots are expected to be fully plowed and salted by tonight. School parking lots and drop-off areas will be cleared on Tuesday in preparation for reopening.
Salting of high-priority roadways will begin later this evening. However, residents should anticipate that some secondary roads may remain snow-packed for the next day or more as crews continue cleanup efforts.
Sidewalk clearing in the downtown area is expected to be completed on Tuesday. Town-plowed sidewalks in other areas, along with snow removal, may take several additional days to finish.
Officials are asking for continued patience as post-storm operations continue.
Parking ban lifted
The on-street parking ban will be lifted at 6:00 am Tuesday morning.
Thank you to the community
Town officials expressed appreciation to residents who stayed off the roads during the height of the storm, helped dig out fire hydrants and catch basins, and checked in on our neighbors.
Clean up will continue over the coming days as crews work to restore full access throughout town.
