Reading Troop 702 Scouts train for 9-day trek through New Mexico Wilderness

Two crews from Reading Scout Troop 702 and their adult advisors spent Memorial Day weekend backpacking in southern New Hampshire in preparation for their 9-day trek at Philmont High Adventure Scout Ranch through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Cimarron, New Mexico, this summer.

In preparation for their New Mexico trek, the scouts hiked approximately 20 miles over the holiday weekend in New Hampshire, summiting Mt. Anna (1676’), Mt. Mack (1943’) Mt. Klem (2000’) and Mt. Belknap (2384’), all just west of Lake Winnipesaukee in the Belknap Range. The scouts and advisors carried everything they needed to survive on their backs while hiking the route, with individual backpacks weighing approximately 30-45 pounds.

The continuous rain on Sunday and Monday made the trip extra challenging as the scouts navigated wet and slippery rockface at the mountain summits and avoided the early symptoms of hypothermia - finger dexterity is the first to go! In addition to working on their physical endurance, the scouts practiced their cooking, bear bag hanging, and leadership skills. Notwithstanding the rain and all their hard work, the scouts still managed to find the time and energy to smile and laugh, and of course play hacky sack and frisbee together every day.
