September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

(2-3 minute read)

The Town of Reading Health Department is recognizing National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month this September, highlighting the importance of supporting healthy kids and families in our community.

Childhood obesity is a complex public health issue that can increase the risk of long-term health concerns such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. But small steps taken as a family can make a lasting difference in building healthier lifestyles for children and teens.

Tips to support healthy kids

The Reading Health Department encourages families to consider the following:

  • Healthy eating is the first step - include more fruits, vegetables, and whole foods in daily meals.

  • Get enough sleep - children who get enough rest are better able to regulate appetite and activity.

  • Less screen time, more family time - encourage outdoor play and activities that bring the family together.

  • Talk to your pediatric PCP - regular check-ins help track healthy growth and provide guidance.

  • Advocate for healthier options for all - support healthier meals and snacks in schools and community programs.

  • Get moving as a family - walking, biking, or even a family dance night can make exercise fun.

These steps, while simple, can create meaningful changes when built into everyday routines.
